Sunday 2nd November Heybridge Lions 9 - 3 Maldon Saints A bright sunny day saw the Lions run out with a full squad for the first time this season, giving the manager the luxury of playing every player in their preferred position. From the off the boys looked really up for it and soon were in front after a ball over the top was helped on to Josh who tucked it away. Two other goals quickly followed, making best use of Joe's pace to beat the offside trap and score. We then got a bit sloppy at the back and let the oppositions centre forward run through and slot the ball under Ellis as he advanced. We also had another perfectly good goal dissallowed for offside when it blatantly wasn't but we went into half time very bouyed by the performance. The second half started much like the first with another ball to Joe which he calmly slotted to make it 4 - 1 then the ref gave a penalty for handball against Dan Green although the ball seemed to hit his hand by accident and was outside the box. The penalty was blasted home giving Ellis no chance. In seasons past we may have crumbled at this point but we are now made of sterner stuff and quickly scored two more goals via Joe and Josh, making it 6 - 2. We then conceded an own goal as Sam sliced a clearance into his own net. At 6 - 3 the job seemed done but the boys were not satisified and we scored 3 more goals from Tom, Billy and another from Joe, bringing his total to 5 for the game. This game clearly shows that when we have a full team our offensive play looks terrific and we appear to be able to score at will although we still look frail defensively and will continue to leak goals until we can sort out the organisation when we don't have the ball. That said, it was an excellent performance from all concerned. Well done lads. -----------------------::::::::::---------------------- |

Sunday 9th November Meadow Youth 2 - 1 Heybridge Lions Our first visit to St John Payne School saw us come up against a well organised and skillful Mildmay side. The first half was one way traffic as Mildmay walked through us at will, even though we hade the pitch slope advantage. Our lack of effort and drive in every department was very apparent and we were very lucky to go into the break one down. The coach read the riot act at half time and demanded more effort and passion from the team. The second half turned out to be a huge improvement on the first although some players still failed to demonstrate the required levels of work. We managed to score a very good goal on one of our few attacks with Joe breaking clear on the right and making a perfect pass for Billy to go on and bury the equaliser. The sides were fairly even from that point onwards but the deadlock was finally broken when the ball was crossed in from the left and Mildmay scored the eventual winner. The lesson we need to take from this game is that our effort levels always need to be high if we are to progress in the league and performances like the first half of this game are not good enough. -----------------------::::::::::---------------------- |

Sunday 16th November Maldon Town Tigers 4 - 0 Heybridge Lions Our worst performace of the season by far. We were poor in defence, completely inept in midfield and ineffective up front against a side that we should have beaten and if we continue to play like this we will be religated for sure and deservedly so. We must put in more effort, especially in midfield, and demonstrate that wearing the Heybridge shirt means something, otherwise, all those people that put in the effort every week to make it possible for you guys to play, might as well claim their weekends back. -----------------------::::::::::---------------------- |

Sunday 23rd November Gallywood youth 1 - 5 Heybridge Lions An early start in arctic conditions saw us visit 3rd division Galleywood in the knockout cup and we performed well. The extra time on the ball given to us by the lower division club enabled us to play some nice passing football and create a number of good chances. The first goal was scored by Dylan after some nice passes between Joe and Josh and was followed up by a good finish from Joe. At 2 - 0 we were cruising then the referee gave a penalty for handball although the ball seemed to strike Dan's hand completely accidentally. The ball was nicely slotted into the corner eluding Ellis' dive, making the score 2 -1. Quickly we pressed forward again and were awarded a penalty for another handball although this was again debatable as the flag was up for offside. Craig stepped up and took the kick which was initially saved but he quickly followed up to poke the ball home, 3 -1. The weather changed from snow to torrential rain as we came out for the second half and we managed to score 2 more goals, one from Joe and another from Billy but everone was glad to hear the final whistle as both sides and all the parents were chilled to the bone. When we play teams that give us time on the ball we look a capable side and pass the ball effectively but we must take those skills into games where we are under more pressure and have less time in possession. Even so, a good win and we progress in the competition. Well done lads. -----------------------::::::::::-------------------- |

Sunday 30th November Heybridge Lions 2 - 6 Wilvale Rangers The scoreline in this game did not reflect our contribution to it and, for me, was our best performance of the season. From the start, it was obvious that Wilvale were a good team who passed the ball well and maintained their discipline and shape whilst battling hard for possession and we were always going to struggle. We only had the bare eleven players so we had to reshuffle the side somewhat but every player put their heart and soul into this game demonstrating the effort levels we have been asking for all season and even after a number of very dubious decisions, both by the lino and referee, we did not let our heads drop at any time. Even as the final whistle went we were still attacking their goal with gusto and were so dissapointed at the end that we did not get a better result. This was exactly what we are looking for in a team performance, if we play like this all season then we will win more than we loose and put a smile on the coaches face (for a change!). It is difficult to identify individuals from this team performance but two players especially put so much into this game and get a special mention. Robbie in midfield/up front and Sam at left back were fantastic today, demonstrating huge heart and effort throughout the 90 minutes. -----------------------::::::::::-------------------- |
